Cairo Plate Carrier Review: Is It Worth the Hype?

This is the Cairo plate carrier from Guard Dog Body Armor. Love these guys — they sent it out a week or two back and I've been wearing it around the house to see how it actually feels before taking it to the range. The name has a story, too: it's named after Cairo, the K9 on the Osama bin Laden raid.

The feature that sold me first: Cobra buckles on the sides. Instead of the weird quick-releases you see everywhere — which, I'll admit, are pretty nice — you get a straight Cobra buckle like you'd have on a tactical belt, on both sides, fully adjustable under the placard. The shoulders get Cobra buckles as well, so you can ditch the carrier fast from up top too.

The second thing that sets it apart is that it comes complete. Usually you buy a carrier and then piecemeal the backpack, the placard, and the armor. The Cairo ships with all of it — including Level 3A soft armor inserts, which is what I'm running today since I'm standing in the woods by myself and don't expect to take rifle rounds. There are two internal sections: one for the soft armor, and a second slot behind it for your shooter-cut or SAPI plates when you want to step up. I've got old footage of shooting the hell out of Guard Dog's Level IV plates up to .308, and they handled every punch.

The placard is a standard, well-constructed setup: three M4-style mag slots up top — today holding shorty 6mm ARC mags and a Rattlesnake Tactical 34-round Glock stick for the FX-9 — plus pistol pouches where I keep Echelon mags, since we've gotten used to running our Echelon with the Sharps Bros grip. There's also an admin pouch, which I use about a hundred times every range trip. Mine holds a multitool from GRITR Gear — under 30 bucks, I believe, and the quality is right there with a Gerber or a Leatherman. And if you'd rather run a placard from HRT, High Speed Gear, or Agilite — or need to switch to 7.62 mags — the speed clips pop off and the whole placard swaps in seconds.

Comfort is where Guard Dog really did their homework. The shoulder pads are super thick, and the back padding is soft and aerated so the carrier sits slightly off your body with some moisture-wicking ability. I told you guys about the 221B Tactical Maxx-Dri vest a few weeks back — with this carrier you might not even need it unless it's brutally hot. The included backpack zips all the way down, swallows a water bladder with routing over the shoulder, and turns this into a legit day-hike-with-plates training rig. Side pouches on both flanks handle extra mags or a radio.

The whole setup comes in right around the $300 price point, which for a carrier, placard, backpack, and 3A soft armor is a hell of a deal. Quality product from a quality company — this one's worth the hype.
