Sig Sauer P229 Pro Review — Classic Sexiness

I've been meaning to put this one out for a while — we just filmed mounting the new Olight Osight on this gun, so no better time. I picked up the P229 Pro about six months ago after going back and forth between it and the P226 Legion, and I just didn't think you could beat the looks of this thing.

This is a hammer-fired gun with a decocker: hammer back in single action, push the decocker, and the hammer comes forward safely into double action. Rack a round and it's immediately in single action. The trigger has a good bit of take-up on that first double-action-style pull, but once you hit the wall it breaks quick, and the reset drops you right back at the wall — so after the first shot you never touch that take-up again.

The slide is cut for RMR, and I've got the Osight riding in a nice inset. One gripe there: the factory sights don't come up high enough to co-witness. I might swap in some higher ones, but honestly I run an optic 90% of the time anyway. The slide is ported with a top port and two side ports per side — the barrel itself is not ported, just the slide — and up front you've got a 1913 rail. I hung a TLR-1 HL on it, and that matters more than usual here: this weapon is very back-heavy, and the light up front balances that weight out.

The looks are what sold me. These G10-style grips have this grayish wood-grain paneling that is just really, really classy, the slide carries a Legion-ish coloring that goes darker on the frame, and the beavertail lets you get up nice and high — the bore axis is pretty high for those of you who care about that kind of stuff; I'm a P320 guy, so I don't give a shit about bore axis. The mag release sits almost flush with the grip screws — you're not hitting it accidentally, but you don't have to contort your thumb either. It's an older-style gun, but I think it's still sexy in 2024. And functional to boot.

On the range in the Florida heat, she shot great — lead on steel, love the trigger pull when firing. The one negative I can actually say about this gun: every once in a while I'm failing to get lock-back on the final round. It could be the ammo I'm shooting; I'm going to run some different, higher-grain ammo through it and see if that clears it up. That's it. That's the list.

Where does it fit? When I first got it I stuck it in the bedside table, and with the light on it I think it's the perfect home defense gun. You can conceal it too — it's almost Glock 19 sized. I run it in the Tier 1 MSP, an inside-the-waistband holster built to take almost any firearm with a TLR-1, and you get a nice snug fit. In this setup it's probably too much to carry straight appendix, but at 1 to 3 o'clock you're good. Now if you'll excuse me, I might go see my guys at Pickett Weaponry about that P226 Legion — I still want that thing, even though I love this gun.
