Q Sugar Weasel Review — Duty or Safe Queen?

First off, apologies in advance — I still haven't got my voice back after about three weeks, but we have a ton of reviews to get out, so I'm grinning and bearing it. Today's is worth it: the Q Sugar Weasel, which I picked up about two and a half, three weeks ago from my good friends at Arsenal Arms in Homestead, Florida. Tell Wayne or Danny that Jon sent you.

Q is known for the Honey Badger and the Fix — generally higher-priced stuff — and the Sugar Weasel is what you'd call their budget line at $1,600. I don't know that I necessarily call that budget. But for right around that price point, what you're getting is almost unparalleled in this business.

Butts to nuts: a Magpul SL-K stock on a six-position buffer tube (there's a QD spot in the stock; I just run my sling through it), and a Reptilia grip that I didn't like at first but that's grown on me enough that I went out and bought a Reptilia riser and QD points afterward. Controls are a Radian 70-degree ambi safety with stubbies on both sides — I'd prefer a longer lever on the thumb side, but you really can't get much better than a 70-degree Radian — plus a Radian Raptor charging handle. The lower is a clear anodized finish that looks brilliant in the sunlight. This is just a really, really good looking gun. I threw an EOTech XPS2 on top for now, though it might make way for a 1-6 or 1-8.

The trigger is literally called the Literally The Best Trigger Ever. Is it literally the best trigger ever? I haven't shot every trigger on the market — but it's the best I've ever shot on the AR platform, and that includes Geissele SSA-Es, G2S, RISE Armament, and CMC. It's a 2.5-pound pull that's actually drop safe, which most competition-weight triggers aren't — Q specifically designed it that way. About a quarter inch of take-up, a solid wall with no mush at all, and the reset puts you instantly back on it. The flat bow has a little curvature at the tip so your finger doesn't slip. It's superb.

Up front: a full-length 15-inch handguard with M-LOK on every angle — you can never have enough M-LOK once lights, lasers, and QD points start piling on — locked to the receiver with Q's proprietary mechanism, and there is zero wiggle or play in it. The barrel is coated, mid-length, and has an adjustable gas block, which is exactly what you want on a gun wearing the Cherry Bomb muzzle device that direct-threads Q's own suppressors. They thought the whole system through. I added a BCM QD point to the handguard and a gray Magpul sling to match.

So: duty or safe queen? These things are absolutely gorgeous rifles — the Sugar Weasel, the Honey Badger, the Fix — and I get why they end up posed in safes on Instagram. But this thing is built. You could run it as a duty weapon, a competition gun, or just to go blast on the range, which is exactly what we did. It fires like a champ, feels great in the hand, and it's probably getting a Q suppressor hung on it next. For $1,600, you can't beat it.
