SetPower RV45D Review — The Ultimate 12V Fridge Freezer for Overlanding & Off-Grid Life

Anytime I'm headed to the ranch or the range with the guys, the same routine plays out: everybody's got to bring their Yeti coolers, stop for ice, and figure out who's hauling what. The SetPower RV45D is my answer to that. It's a 45-quart dual-zone fridge and freezer, and right now I've got it on what we'll call shore power at the family cabin — but it's a 12-volt unit, so it'll run off your car, your generator, or your solar generator just the same.

The layout is smart. It's wheeled with a long carry handle, so you can roll it around loaded instead of lifting it, and there are carry handles on both sides when you do have to lug it into a vehicle. The lid is reversible so it opens from either side. Inside there's a big compartment on the left and a shorter one on the right, with a movable divider so you choose your zones. I've got one side set at 35 degrees for cold storage and the other at 20 for freezing — meats and ice packs down in the freezer side, everything else stays cool.

Capacity-wise you're fitting a little over 50 cans — we'll call them beer cans, it's the Fourth of July — on one side, or around 60 bottles of water. That's legitimately in ice-chest territory for space, without giving up half the volume to ice.

The feature that matters most off-grid is the two power modes. It runs 45 watts on eco mode and 60 watts at full power. Do the math against a 1,000-watt power station and you're looking at a little over 15 hours on full power, or close to a full 24 on eco. That's built for a full day in the woods or an overnight camp. And it gets to temperature fast — I fired it up right before filming and the fridge side was already down to 32 degrees in maybe ten minutes.

Two pieces of practical advice. First, it plugs into 12 volts through an adapter with a 15-amp fuse, and I'd always carry a couple spare fuses in case a power surge pops one. Second, pre-chill it in the house on wall power before you leave — that way your vehicle or solar generator isn't burning power pulling it down to temp. This is the bigger 45-quart model; they make smaller ones and I believe a 55-quart as well.
