Tacticon Apex Predator V3 Solar Red Dot — Budget Option or Budget Fail?

The Verdict

The first unit had a weird solar glitch; the replacement ran flawlessly — solid budget optic.

The Apex Predator V3 brings an all-aluminum housing, solar backup, three reticle options, and a QD mount to the budget red dot fight, and on the range it was accurate and rock solid without even sighting it in. My first unit had a genuine defect — the circle reticle vanished whenever sunlight hit the solar panel — and I called it out honestly. Tacticon had never seen the issue, sent a replacement, and that one ran flawlessly. What makes a great brand over a good one is how rare those defects are and how they handle them; they made it right.

/The Rundown

Today we're taking a look at the Apex Predator V3 from Tacticon Armament. Full transparency: Tacticon sent me this optic, but with zero guarantees I'd say it was good. If a company wants to pay me to speak well about a product, I'm just not going to do it — not in our world, where the products we review are things people count on to save their life.

Out of the box the packaging is nice, and everything you need is in there: CR2032 batteries, a cleaning cloth, an adjustment tool, a tool kit, a separate mount, and — this is the good part — a QD mount already installed. It's got almost a Sig Romeo 4 look to it, honestly. Removable lens caps, top and side turrets adjustable in 1 MOA clicks, and a battery compartment that takes a single 2032, which is great because I keep a ton of them in my bag.

The spec sheet punches above the price: all-aluminum housing, a solar charger on top (I don't think it'll do a whole lot of charging for you, but you shouldn't need much), a 20,000-hour battery rating, seven brightness levels including one night-vision setting, and shake-awake with five-minute and 30-minute auto-off. The reticle system is my favorite part — a 2 MOA dot, a circle, and a circle-dot, three options for different scenarios without changing optics. It comes in matte black or matte tan, and it's rated shockproof, rainproof, and fogproof. I'm not doing drop tests — I don't feel like fucking up my guns — but Tacticon's own channel beats the ever-loving hell out of these if you want that content. The unlimited eye relief claim holds up too: I mounted it way forward on the Scorpion and had no problems and no distortion.

On the range, I took a risk and didn't sight it in before shooting targets — and it was pretty much damn spot on. Rugged, no play, didn't move, and the dot was easy to pick up in bright daylight. Then the problem showed up: the reticle kept switching between circle-dot and dot-only, completely on its own. I wasn't touching it. For me that's critical — I love the circle dot for steel and for self-defense, where you just put that circle center mass and boom, you're hitting every time. So on that day, I had to give it a fail.

After filming I figured out the cause: cover the solar panel with your hand and the circle came back; take your hand away and it vanished. Sunlight hitting the solar panel was killing the circle. I reached out to Tacticon, and they'd genuinely never seen the problem before. They sent a new unit, I took it to the range, and it performed flawlessly — everything else I'd said held true. Sturdy, held zero, great reticle. All manufactured products throw a defect now and then; what separates a great brand is how rarely it happens and whether they make it right.
