Olight Osight Review — A Rechargeable Game-Changer From Olight

For the first time, Olight — the company that brings you all kinds of weapon lights and flashlights — has released a red dot optic for pistols: the Olight Osight. They sent this one out to me to look at before release and give feedback, and today we've got it mounted on a P229 Pro. Right out of the box there's a bunch of goodies: a charging housing, an adapter plate for rail mounting, a four-compartment pill-container-looking thing full of screws (4-40, 6-32, M4, M3), a windage tool, a screw tool for easy on-and-off on the go, and a little carrying case with a wiping pad. Hard to lose any of it.

The form factor is absolutely gorgeous. It's a 3 MOA dot in a one-piece machined 7075 aluminum housing, cut for the RMR footprint, so it'll fit a myriad of pistols. Brightness settings live on the side along with elevation and windage, and I'll say this — the thing gets darn bright for a 3 MOA dot. The glass is crisp and clear with no real distortion around the edges. There is a slight blue tint, but you'll see that on almost every curved-glass red dot — those of you with a Trijicon RMR know that distinct blue hue, and this is nowhere near that.

The charger is the party trick. It's a little housing with USB-C on the back and a charge indicator on top. You don't take the optic off the gun at all — pop the housing down over the optic and an oscillating charge symbol tells you where the battery sits. Mine read about 50% right out of the box. It even doubles as a protective cover when the gun's riding in a bag. I've never seen anything like it. And you're not babysitting the battery either: it's rated to 70,000 hours on the lowest setting and 50,000 hours on mode three, which is still pretty darn bright — years of use even if you never recharge.

It's motion-sensing, so the dot fires up as soon as you pick the gun up and shuts off after it sits. That's my one honest question mark: the anti-red-dot crowd always asks how you know a shake-awake dot will come on when you need it. Companies like Sig and Holosun have earned that trust because theirs come on every single time — Olight now has to earn it too. Maybe we'll do an update in a couple months on how it holds up to steady fire.

At the range, my pre-emptive adjustments were honestly too aggressive — I should've just shot it first. But after walking it in from down-right, it was spot on, quick to adjust, and it never lost zero. We put about 150 rounds through it, the dot stayed super bright with no flickering or bouncing around, there's zero play in the mount, and at day's end the battery still read the same 50% we started with.

Final verdict: seven and a half to eight out of ten. Easy to mount, stable, sturdy, crisp glass, and a genuinely unique recharging system, expected to land right around $200 to $250. It releases today — head over to Olight's website and check it out. Very good optic for that price.
